Leaked AMD Radeon “Malta” HD 7990 Sold On Ebay For $96,100
An engineering sample of AMD’s upcoming dual “Tahiti” GPU graphics card, the Radeon HD 7990 known as “Malta” and first seen here, has just been sold on Ebay for an astronomical US $96,100. The opening bid was set at $0.99, and by the 33rd bid was sitting at $1,000 – the same price as a new PowerColor AX7990 6GBD5-A2DHJ DEVIL13 Radeon HD 7990 6 GB card from Newegg.
By the 56th bid the card price was up to $2,000, double the price of the PowerColor Radeon HD 7990. The biggest jump in bidding was from $50,000 to $89,999 in a single bid. Ultimately, the auction ended after the 104th bid had been placed to the value of $96,100 – enough to buy 96 of the PowerColor Radeon HD 7990s!
AMD normally guard their upcoming products very closely, and may have been involved in the bidding war in order to recover their card and trace the source of the leak via the card’s serial number.
According to the specifications on the listing, the card will ship with two full Tahiti GPUs with 2048 stream processors running at 950 MHz and a total of 6 GB (3 GB per core) of GDDR5 memory running at 6.00 GHz on a 384-bit bus. More pictures from the auction follow.
