AMD Updates Radeon HD 7950 In Preperation Of GeForce GTX 660 Ti
In response to NVIDIA’s upcoming 28 nm Kepler GK104-based GeForce GTX 660 Ti, AMD has released a BIOS update for the Radeon HD 7950 graphics card which should make them more competitive in the $300 to $400 price tier.
The BIOS is available for all reference design Radeon HD 7950 graphics cards, and increases the GPU clock speed from the old 800 MHz to the new 850 MHz. In addition to this, a new feature called “PowerTune with Boost” makes an appearance. Much like Intel’s Turbo Boost and NVIDIA’s Boost, PowerTune with Boost works by increasing the GPU core frequency under heavy load. In the case of the HD 7950, the boost increases the clock speed as high as 925 MHz. The memory clock speed is unaffected by the update, staying at 1,250 MHz (6.00 GHz GDDR5 effective).
All reference Radeon HD 7950s manufactured from mid August 2012 onwards will come shipped with the updated BIOS and will land at the same price as current cards. If you would like to try the updated BIOS on an older HD 7950, you can download the updated BIOS using the link below. Please note that updates are to be carried out at your own risk and the BIOS selector switch must be in the “1” position. Image source — techPowerUp!
