GIGABYTE AERO 15 CLASSIC-XA Review
Overclocking
All overclocking testing was only done on AC power, as there are too many limitations on when running on battery to see results. Being a non-K series Core i7, overclocking was not done on the GIGABYTE AERO 15 CLASSIC-XA’s processor. That’s not to say that you can’t do some tweaking. Thermal throttling means that the CPU often runs slower than 4.4 GHz, and this is something that can be attacked. By setting the voltage offset to -0.120v, temperatures are slightly reduced. This means that the CPU can boost higher and for longer without hitting the thermal limit.
CPU Overclocking
CineBench R15 gets a nice boost from 1,125 points all the way up to 1,245 points. XTU gets a similar from 1,971 to 2,170. Consecutive runs resulted in not a single point difference in either direction at stock or tweaked, so the difference is not a result of margin of error. The boost received is most certainly perceivable and noticable, especially in situations where time is money.
GPU Overclocking
The GPU is where things get interesting, and the GeForce RTX 2070 has plenty of wiggle room. By increasing the GPU core speed by +204 MHz and the GPU memory by +190 MHz, 3DMark Firestrike Extreme saw a massive increase. At stock the laptop scored 7,397 points, while overclocking took that all the way to 7,998 points. Time Spy jumped from 5,508 points to 5,739, and Port Royal from 3,282 to 3,548. At these settings the GPU averaged around 1,395 MHz and peaked at 1,485 MHz, up from 1,215 and 1,305 MHz respectively. Temperate was the only thing preventing higher clock speeds, as the GPU hovered around the 80’c mark.
