Intel Haswell-EX Processors To Introduce Support For DDR4
Since its launch in 2007 with support from various Intel P35 “Bearlake”-based motherboards, DDR3 has been the latest standard in x86 RAM technology. Driven by the Core i-series and Phenom II processors which required and recommended DDR3 respectively, DDR3 quickly forced the older and more power-hungry DDR2 off of high-end platforms. After being on the market for five years, DDR3 is finally coming to the end of its life with Intel announcing that 2014 will bring enterprise processors based on the “Haswell” architecture supporting DDR4.
The desktop range of Haswell processors will continue support for DDR3 with the possibility of higher clock speeds, while the server “Haswell-EX” family of processors will be the first x86 processors supporting DDR4 which will later filter down to desktop platforms.
