Zotac GeForce GTX 680 Extreme Edition 1.2 GHz Previewed
Rumor has it that Zotac is working on a GeForce GTX 680 with the GPU core clocked at 2.0 GHz, however this is indeed just a rumor. Details have emerged that the Zotac GeForce GTX 680 Extreme Edition (as it’s called) will come with a base-line clock speed of 1.20 GHz and the 2 GB of GDDR5 memory sitting at 1.50 GHz (6.00 GHz effective). However, Zotac has revealed that the card will be capable of at least 1.5v core voltage without hitting OCP (over current protection) which will assist with extreme overclocking with sub-zero cooling. They have also revealed that given the right circumstances, a core clock speed of 2.00 GHz may just be possible. This will, however, require extreme cooling, an intimate knowledge of overclocking the card and a lot of luck.
Aside from the higher stock core clock speed and increased voltage capabilities, the Extreme Edition will also sport a 12-phase VRM design, a BIOS optimised for extreme cooling, an array of voltage measure points and a mini-USB port. Unlike the connection on EVGA cards which goes the the EVBot, the USB connector on the Extreme Edition is meant to be coupled to the motherboard for direct tuning via their Firestorm overclocking software, although no reason has been given for the approach taken.
